Up for sale today is this Civil Defense highway sign: "in the event of an attack on New York City, this highway will be closed to all traffic except Civil Defense and military vehicles."
the Civil Defense system represented here was set up in 1950 in response to the growing threat of Soviet nuclear attack on United States soil.  Signs with the triangle-in-a-circle CD logo were made for all manners of emergency needs: these were located all over the state of New York on major highways, both predating and part of the Interstate and Defense Highway System.
An original of these is not only very rare to find scrapped, but is a herculean effort to transport; also, as far as I know, they have all been destroyed.  So here is your chance to own an excellent display piece, without chancing a hernia.
The sign is flat printed on heavy gauge steel, with completely accurate layout and fonts.  It weighs about 7 pounds, 6 ounces.
the original signs in use in the field were much more colossal - this one is a precise rescaling of the freeway style sign down to a much more manageable 20 x 15 inch size.  it is a non-reflective sign - perfect for ordinary display, indoors or outdoors.

This is a high quality, heavy steel sign.  Accept no imitations that may be one-third this price, but are one-tenth the quality. No cheap tin to be found here, with the wrong fonts, layouts, size, shape, or any other manner of embarrassing imperfection. This one will make even the most discerning collector stick their nose into the sign, as it looks that good from that close!
