These early 20c. aprons come from the storeroom of Connecticut's oldest Masonic Lodge, Hiram Lodge No. 1, New Haven, founded in 1750. Hiram Lodge boasts several notable members including Benedict Arnold, General David Wooster, and Hiram Bingham III, an explorer upon whom Indiana Jones was based.Senior Deacon Apron (square, compasses, and sun in the center): Very worn with hints of exceptional craftsmanship: metal coil fringes; white leather; exemplary needlework. A truly unique feature is the Masonic emblem on the apron front: the compasses are embroidered metal; the square is made up of dozens of metallic sequins; and the sun is a singular medallion representing the face of Apollo. This must have been a spectacular piece when new. 14" wide X 12" high X .1" thick. Rope ties: one with full tassel; one missing its tassel fringe.
